Disarming Villains, One Story at a Time

There’s a scene in the very enjoyable 1986 movie Rustler’s Rhapsody where Rex O’Herlihan, the Singing Cowboy, is settled in for the night, penning a letter home to his mother. He is the pristine good guy—starched, always in a white hat, and known for disarming villains by shooting them only in the hand.I feel a little like Rex as I send this newsletter off to you this morning. If you remember, Rex’s letter went something like, “Dear Mom, please send funds...”Rex’s mission in life was to fight off the bad guys and save towns across the West. We relate to that on more levels than we care to admit, and we hope you’ll join us in doing all we can to tell the stories of the families and communities that rely on ranching and extraction industries for their livelihoods.Toward that effort, we have established the RANGE community foundation as a way for our readers and longtime supporters to help fund the reporting, publishing and distribution required to make sure those stories are gathered firsthand, told accurately and carried far beyond the communities where they begin. We’ve sent this letter out to the many supporters who over the years have kept RANGE magazine alive, and we would like to thank those of you who have responded with kind words and generous contributions. If you haven’t yet had a chance to see the letter, see below...we hope you’ll join us in the good work as we tell these stories and continue disarming the villains.

America 250 - Happy Independence Day!

I was six years old in 1976 for the 200th Anniversary of our country. My Aunt Cathy was working in the Ford White House and helped with those celebrations. It's exciting to be a part of the 250th Anniversary in our own community and be supporting that celebration. Happy Independence Day, United States of America.

Happy Anniversary!

Happy Anniversary!

It's summer on the RANGE for all intents and purposes. Graduations galore, cattle out to pasture or moved up to high country on summer allotments. Gardens should be in by now, and there's plenty of front porch sitting to be had as the evenings cool. Shockingly, this week we celebrate one year of RANGE magazine under our ownership. I cannot believe it's been a year already. Where does the time go? Most of the stories are in from our writers for the Fall 2026 edition of the magazine, and we're about ready to start the editing process, along with rounding up a few of our strays -- the writers who haven't yet sent their stories. I was always in this last batch of stragglers, begging CJ for more time, sheepishly confessing to bad time-management or unavailable sources, or horribly written prose. Because of that, the tendency is toward leniency and encouragement, and it does help that they don't all come in at once, allowing for the work to regulate a bit with a natural tempo given work styles and personalities. This has been my favorite part of this whole grand adventure -- getting to know our writers and our readers. Thank you all so much for your calls and letters, emails and little notes -- you mean the world to us as we've learned how to produce a national magazine, and your encouragement has kept us going.

Back in the Saddle...

After a brief hiatus for some funerals and new babies, we're back at work on the newsletter. Life seems to have hit us this month from both ends of the generational spectrum, and we are glad to be back here with you to catch you up on all things RANGE. (Baby pictures from the annoying granny available upon request)...
